i think film can be over-romanticised as high art and can suffer from over-pretense.

Imitation is not art. That's why it is called imitation.

On a further note, and because I'm drunk right now, how can anyone, and I'm looking at the posts above here, say that ANY film is not art. The whole point is that you put something out there to be appreciated. Some might find it good, some bad. That does not disqualify it from being art. Art is the creation of something.

I can't believe this debate is still going on. If Chance doesn't think film is art, who cares? The man's entitled to his own opinion. But qualifying it with some vauge emotional waffle does not advance the debate.

    Or am I just drunk?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">that maybe, but is it not innovative?

arts, craft, culture. only future generations will be able to work it out by the rubbish we leave in our landfills just as we value the rubbish left behind by the romans ...

I can't help but think that if you don't consider yoursefl an artist and you only see yourself as putting things on film that are trite and true then your films will suck balls. Your inention as a filmmaker should ALWAYS be to be inovative. to BE an artist. Yes I might agree that a lot of films are not artistic - but those people are just making a film much like a little child puts together a plastic modle - but if you are not making your own modle from scratch - doing somethign that has never been done before then why even make films?

Your medephor of the prison cell is good - and I believe that is how everyone should view a film - that is how I do it - and therefore film is an art form.

And can you disagree that all artist in all art mediums control what the viewer sees to an extent? Just like a painter the filmmaker puts certain things on his canvas - they make the choice as to what goes up - it is the audience that interprates it - you can't deny this doesn't happen with film - we do it here on the forum all the time - debate films - that is why films still exist because they are so interprative - even the shittiest most over produced film is up for interpretation, speculation, disscution - you CANNOT say film is not art because in simply having this conversation you are proving that it is!
